Adventure of the Week - Whernside Mountain

Adventure of the Week 🐾

This week i have decided to share with you one of our all time favourite adventures... Whernside! 🐾 Tara absolutely loves this walk. Lots of sniffs... lots of sheep poop... and lots of fellow dog owners to mug for treats on the climb up! πŸ˜‰

Whernside is a mountain in the Yorkshire Dales standing at 2,415ft. It is the tallest of the 3 peaks - Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent. Climbing Whernside makes for a huge sense of accomplishment, and if you go on a clear day, spectacular views! πŸ”

You start by parking in one of the roadside laybys next to the Ribblehead Viaduct. From there, follow the obvious path heading toward the viaduct, without passing underneath it. The path will take you alongside the railway, eventually passing a cottage and a small signal box. Follow this path for around 2 miles until you cross over an aqueduct and then take the left fork when the path divides. This is where you'll come across a small stile, which can be a bit tricky for manoeuvring a dog over. With a bit of teamwork, the two of us managed to lift over Tara (a 40kg German Shepherd who's a bit daft at the best of timesπŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ) relatively easily... but i'm not sure if you'd be able to manage on your own. Once you've made it over the stile, get ready for the climb! It took us around 70 minutes to reach the top, walking at an average pace. This includes a couple of rest stops to relax our legs and smother Tara with 'Well Done!' cuddles.

Once we reached the summit, we sadly didn't get to marvel at any of the delightful views. Being the silly adventurers that we are, we unknowingly chose the foggiest day of the week in mid-January to embark on our little adventure, so we couldn't see more than 4ft in front of us β›„ However, from the hours i've spent enviously searching the hashtag #whernside on Instagram and doing copious amounts of research, i can tell you for sure that the views are truly breathtaking if you pick a clear day! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜

Even with the views aside, the walk to the summit of Whernside remains one of our firm favourites. It's tiring, it's beautiful and the dog thoroughly enjoyed it! (Which is all that really matters anyway...) πŸ˜‚ On our descent, the route we took was the same way we came, but there is also the option to do a circular walk.

Boring bits:

πŸ’¦ If you decide to take your pooch, please make sure you carry at least a 2L bottle of water solely for the dog... as it's thirsty work for them!

⚠️ Be cautious of the stile which is 2 miles into the walk. You may need a helping hand lifting a large dog over.
